With the support from MS 16 godigs.org develops interactive tool

The alliance for tax fairness created the Tax Payer game (available on their website at www.godigs.org). This game tries to involve the public, allowing players to distribute Latvia’s state budget for 2017 – 8327.5 million euros.

The game saves each of the choices by the players and groups them in different subgroups, considering age, gender and education level. More than 5000 unique budget spending options are currently available. The results of the game contribute to the general understanding of public opinion.

According to the results, most players have recognized the need for the government to increase spending on health, which is in line with the government’s current behavior. Interestingly, most people with secondary education under the age of 28 believe that pensions should be reduced. By contrast, until the age of 20 and from the age of 45, the opposite is true – at least pensions should be maintained at an existing level or increased. Almost every third participant believes that the defense budget should be reduced, instead resources should be directed at promoting public safety, including the police. The field of education is one of the sectors that most respondents want to increase their budget spending (with the exception of school-age respondents). The heading of expenditure, such as culture and contributions to the budget of the European Union, has not been reduced or increased. Most of the games respondents’ spending on these two industries has remained unchanged.

One of a kind empirical legal research completed

At the core of MS 16 is research team, which aims to provide subsidiaries with world-class research and knowledge to support companies in MS 16 group. At the request of Tax Robot, MS 16 research team conducted case law analysis and helped to improve tax robot code which evaluates risks.

The research team identified lack of quantitative evidence to support the values in risk framework. To fill the gap, upwards to 3000 cases of tax disputes between undertakings and tax authorities were collected and organized. In cooperation with leading Latvian universities, 14 students prepared and uploaded case law in a software specially built for this project. This software categorizes the case law, provides information on date, time, result and content of the case law.

The result provided Tax Robot team with a set of new risks that compliments Tax Robot’s automatized risk manager. However, the most critical finding was exact weight of each risk, improving the accuracy of the program. Tax Robot team no posses risk framework that more refined than anything on the market at the moment.

It provides customers with information, such as the statistical probability of positive result in case of litigation. This information combined with the value and frequency of transaction can give risk score based on thousand’s of the similar situation, already litigated.

MS 16 announces scholarships for university students

Each year, the best and most talented students from Latvian universities and colleges, compete for the chance to be awarded prestigious MS 16 Talent scholarship. Students must show motivation and talent in their respective fields to eligible, as well students must have proven track record of academic excellence.

Scholarships, available to bachelor and master students, are upwards to 5000 EUR per student in one academic year. Scholarships, generally are directed towards covering students tuition fee, however, under specific conditions, students may use the funds to advance their research projects or invest the funds in the startup idea of their own. MS 16 does not award scholarships directly. For eligibility and rules, please contact your respective university or college.

Why do we give scholarships?

On the broader scope, scholarships create an opportunity for the community. The more educated the public and the full range of possibilities students have, the better jobs they will have, or they will create. The scholarship, therefore, builds a community, with more diversity and more opportunity.

In a more narrow sense, universities and colleges cost a lot more than it used to. The tuition fees are up, as well as living costs. This economic reality does preclude some bright and talented people from pursuing a degree. At MS 16 we want everyone to have the chance to prove themselves, a chance to do something good for themselves and the community.

Additionally, some students with big dreams and world-changing ideas are not able to pursue them. Obligations, such as debt accumulated during the study years limits the opportunity to risk and to engage in unproven ideas, which we believe is a huge barrier and with our MS 16 Talent scholarship, we aim to reduce.
